On SHIELD and Avengers radar, you should know that in the late morning of 6 February, the two supervillains Loki and the Red Skull appeared in Times Square, apparently engaged in a violent battle. Several cars were damaged and some passers-by hurt in the crossfire or outright assaulted upon approach (with one resulting in a casualty). Witness accounts probably indicate that Loki was, uh, running for his life making a dignified strategic retreat.

Both parties teleported away separately.

(Local news would have caught wind of it too, with Schmidt as an unknown and Loki as possibly an Asgardian politician.)
