avengers_assembled- 12 commercial flights are missing in the air
- 4 have already crashed
- All are believed to be hosting hostile suspects afflicted with a condition that is causing electrical and mechanical failures within the aircraft
- 1 of them is carrying Betty Ross
Initially, Thor, Rhodes and Stark are scrambled to attend to the airplane problem. If Vance can hang at that altitude, he'll be included. Stark will be informed that there is a terrorist attack in progress, that four planes have already crashed and that Betty is on one of the (many) planes that is currently unaccounted for. Any plane that looks as though it might be under terrorist control en route for a civilian population will be shot out of the sky by the air force before it gets close.
It's up to Tony to decide if they go after Betty first or focus on trying to save whoever's closest.
En rout, Coulson should come back online to further inform that the 10 Rings are believed to be responsible for the attack and that the type of interference they encountered before in China is likely involved in the aircraft failures. So. Try not to fall out of the sky.
If you do hopefully Thor will catch you.
The Maximoffs and Steve are dispatched to the CDC where Coulson and Bruce are.
Coulson will inform them of the details of the situation and let them arrive at the conclusion that they're here as damage control/containment in the event that Bruce loses it when he finds out about Betty on their own. Run around him in circles until he's pooped out. That kind of thing. Officially they are there because the CDC appears to have been targeted.
The suspect detained at the CDC facility is dead via a chemical injection administered by the CDC on Coulson's orders.
Bruce et al are welcome to examine the body with science. When they are finished SHIELD scientists will take over where they left off.

Plane #5: Original flight path from New York City, New York to Chicago, Illinois. Saved by Tony Stark and Vance Astrovik, landed on a private airfield in Ohio.

Plane #9: Original flight path from New York City, New York to Marrakesh, Morocco. Fell out of contact prior to landing, continued on, experienced mid-air breakup over the Mediterranean Sea.
Plane #10: Original flight path from New York City, New York to Portland, Oregon. Fell out of contact, seen flying off-coast, where it experienced mid-air breakup over the North Pacific Ocean.
Plane #11: Original flight path from New York City, New York to Los Angeles, California. Seemed to be on crash course towards civilian population, and was taken out by the Air Force when James Rhodes and Thor Odinson could not make it in time.
Plane #12: Original flight path from New York City, New York to Seattle, Washington. Contains Dr. Elizabeth Ross. Satellite imaging shows a commercial plane passing over the Northwestern Passages, but it was never detected by radar and such technologies (making it unique, no such deadzoning applied or applies to the other hijacked planes). It would have flown into Russian airspace, if it cut through the North Pole, but Russian intelligence is confirming nothing.
Bonus fall out statistics:
1606 people died today.
All came from JFK airport with flights departing in the same rough span of about five hours. Please don't make me figure out specific times/distances/speeds/colours for each one, I promise it doesn't matter!
Passenger lists will be available.
JFK was shut down as soon as those four planes were confirmed and there is a huge investigation launched. Big impact. Expect memorial services and confused media reporting. There will be no information escaped yet about anything biological. Wild theories about who was responsible, from al-Qaeda to a series of terrible accidents to CIA coverups to aliens. Likely no mention of Ten Rings, at the moment.
